Project Description
The main objective of the NEWEX project entitled is the exchange of researchers from the institutions participating in the project, and hence the development of their professional careers and promotion of international and inter-sector cooperation between EU countries institutions. Another objective is to foster, improve and develop permanent international and inter-sector collaboration between academic research centers (Lublin University of Technology, Technical University of Kosice, University of Minho) and industrial organizations, i.e. SMEs (Borra s.r.o., Zamak-Mercator LLC and SEZ-Krompachy a.s.).
The research and technology development activities under the NEWEX project focus on in-depth investigation and tests of the extrusion technique which is vital for several application fields, so the results will be of great value mostly to the industry, including Europe-based SMEs (producers of polymers and polymer products, producers of cosmetics, food and additive masterbatches). These R&D activities will directly improve production processes (higher efficiency, lower energy consumption, less waste).
Another rationale behind this action is to enhance the exchange of knowledge, best practices, know-how, innovations, experience, mutual cooperation and culture of work between different organizations (academia and industry-representing SMEs) and different regions and countries in Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Portugal).
The overall research and technology development goal of the proposed action is twofold: to design and manufacture a pilot extruder and to test the prototype of a new generation extruder with an innovative active grooved feed section (IAGFS), an original rotational barrel segment (ORBS) and a special screw (SS) in the processing of different composite and nanocomposite materials.
The scientific and innovative objective of the project is to develop the concept, design, manufacturing and testing of an original plasticizing system of the new generation extruder, as well as to determine the extruder’s geometry and technological conditions of extrusion to increase effectiveness of this process. This innovative extruder will ensure higher polymer flow rate, better quality of extrudate mainly due to higher homogenization of mechanical and thermal properties, as well as improved structure of the material, smaller unit consumption of energy, and higher energy efficiency compared to currently used extruders. This solution is expected to outperform in all aspects the current ones by at least 10%.
The utilitarian objective of the project is to open up new possibilities mainly for polymer processing and development of new extrusion techniques and technologies in polymer processing, food and cosmetics industries.
