Millions for research equipment for our University

Within three years, Lublin University of Technology will spend nearly PLN 43 million on creating a research center for pro-environmental and energy-saving materials and technologies. Over PLN 36 million is a subsidy from the Intelligent Development Operational Program 2014-2020. The rest will be covered by the University from its own resources.

- A year ago, the project entitled "Research center for pro-environmental and energy-saving materials and technologies (CeBMaT)" was placed on the so-called Polish Map of Research Infrastructure, next to 70 other units that significantly increase the excellence of scientific research. From Lublin, only our university was on this list. Unfortunately, the then rules did not provide for any project funding. We had to apply for it in other calls. And it worked - says Prof. Zbigniew Pater, rector of Lublin University of Technology.

The Polish Map of Research Infrastructure was created on the initiative of the Minister of Science and Higher Education. It brings together the infrastructures with the highest potential for scientific excellence, combining the research potential in areas important for the development of science and the country.

- Our center will be the only scientific unit in the region that will conduct research in the field of energy, environmental engineering, materials engineering as well as the engineering of opto- and mechatronic systems necessary to control technological processes - emphasizes Prof. Wojciech Franus, Vice-Rector for Science at Lublin University of Technology.

In order to carry out such research, the university will purchase 13 research stations that are unique on a national scale, such as an X-ray nanotomograph, transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, liquid chromatograph coupled with a mass spectrometer, and a thermomechanical process simulator.

- We will use the equipment to obtain materials with strictly defined structure parameters and properties, such as: implants, composites, laminates or sorbents. We will also deal with the essence of phenomena related to, among others: obtaining energy, obtaining functional materials, recycling waste materials and analyzing their course using advanced computer systems and algorithms which use deep learning - informs Prof. Wojciech Franus.

The purchased equipment will be placed, among others, in the laboratories of the Center for Innovation and Advanced Technologies of LUT and it will be used by the university’s employees as well as external entities, including enterprises interested in performing specialized tests.
