We will build modular energy storage facilities for enterprises
Lublin University of Technology together with the Municipal Transport Company Lublin Ltd. (MPK Lublin Ltd.) and Tele-Fonika Kable Group (TF Kable) will work on a project concerning the construction of modular energy storage facilities dedicated to enterprises. As a result, three pilot energy storage facilities will be built: the first at Lublin University of Technology for functional research, the second at one of the TF Kable production plants and the third at the MPK Lublin depot.
The letter of intent in this matter was signed on March 24 this year by Prof. Zbigniew Pater, rector of LUT, Tomasz Fulara, president of MPK Lublin and Jakub Siemiński, director of the Development Department of TF Kable.
- The facility is to have a container structure with the possibility of parallel connection of several / a dozen units in order to increase the total power and / or capacity, depending on the user's needs. The facility is to be universal, i.e. it is to be able to be connected to both a three-phase low-voltage network and a DC network, e.g. a traction network for trolleybuses - says Dr. Eng. Dariusz Zieliński from the Department of Electrical Drives and Machines, Lublin University of Technology.
An additional advantage of such a facility is an expansion card containing a microcontroller managing the facility at the local level. With this system, it will be possible to optimize the power and energy consumption in an enterprise, and thus reduce the connection capacity of an enterprise and generate savings related to the reduced peak load.
The solution is dedicated to enterprises and constitutes a response to the need to reduce power consumption.
- Thanks to this project, we will be able to use the stored energy. In enterprises such as MPK Lublin, the problem is very visible because the peak power consumption is over 1500 kW, and the daily average - 70 kW. This generates huge costs resulting from the provision of connection capacity by the energy company. The proposed storage facility is to partially cover the demand for energy and power at times when the maximum loads are applied. As a result, the daily load curve will be flattened and it will be possible to reduce the total connection capacity of the company - says Tomasz Fulara, the President of the Management Board of MPK Lublin.
This is an important issue due to the planned regulations, according to which enterprises will be charged an additional fee depending on the ratio of the duration of the load with the full connection power to the entire working time of an enterprise (on a daily basis). It is therefore profitable to lower the peak (by discharging the storage facility) and increase the load in the valley (by charging the storage facility) because the more even the load curve, the lower the fee charged to the enterprise.
The project of building mobile energy storage facilities is one of the strategic development directions of TF Kable Group.
- They are a natural complement to the offer dedicated to renewable energy sources, i.e. medium voltage cable systems for offshore and onshore wind farms. Importantly, the functionality of this solution will include the possibility of connecting them to a photovoltaic farm, which will reduce electricity losses, eliminating the need to turn it off due to, for example, a voltage increase in the grid. Thanks to this solution, it will be possible to significantly increase the self-consumption rate of photovoltaic parks - says Jakub Siemiński, the director of the Development Department at Tele-Fonika Kable.
