1500 protective face shields will go to primary school teachers

The production of protective face shields at Lublin University of Technology is underway. So far over 2.6 thousand of them have been produced and in the first place they went to LUT employees.

On January 26, 1500 protective face shields were donated free of charge to the Education Office in Lublin to protect primary school teachers in our voivodeship. The gift was presented to the Lublin Education Superintendent by the Rector of LUT in the presence of the Minister of Education and Science.

After weeks of distance learning, the youngest students from grades 1-3 returned to schools after the winter break. In this group, it is particularly difficult to provide online education or use other distance learning techniques. In addition, children, to develop properly, must have contact with their peers and that is why the possibility of teaching them at schools is so important. - Our goal is now to help teachers of grades 1-3 in conducting classes. I hope that our protective face shields will increase the safety of students and teaching staff. This campaign is another example that our university and its modern equipment serve the local community - said Prof. Zbigniew Pater, Rector of Lublin University of Technology.

- We really appreciate this valuable initiative and the help from Lublin University of Technology. It significantly supports the efforts to ensure the safety of education during the pandemic - said Teresa Misiuk, the Lublin Education Superintendent.

The meeting was also attended by Prof. Przemysław Czarnek, the Minister of Education and Science. – LUT’s initiative is a beautiful example of solidarity in difficult times of the pandemic, concern for common security and good cooperation between universities and schools. LUT’s campaign is also an example of good practice in supporting schools, not only in the field of educating children and youth but also in terms of the functioning of institutions and their employees.

The production began on the initiative of LUT’s employees as well as the employees of the State School of Higher Education in Chełm. Scientists from LUT designed the band and their colleagues from Chełm created the mold that was installed on an injection molding machine in one of the LUT’s laboratories. The protective face shields are manufactured and assembled by the employees of the Department of Polymer Processing and the Department of Computer Modelling and Metal Forming Technologies. They are formed by using conventional injection technology. This method ensures very good quality of parts, high efficiency and low cost of production. They can produce about 200 pieces daily and the cost of producing one protective face shield is about PLN 3.

- The production of the protective face shields continues and they will be delivered to the places where they are most needed - declares Prof. Zbigniew Pater.
