Sudden loss of Prof. Piotr Tarkowski

We are very sad to inform that Professor Piotr Tarkowski died suddenly on December 1, 2021.

Prof. Piotr Tarkowski was born on May 7, 1952. In 1975, he graduated from Lublin University of Technology in the field of Mechanics and Machine Design, and in 1985 he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled: "Modification of the durability of precision pairs by ion implantation" at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin.

In 1995 he obtained a postdoctoral degree at Poznan University of Technology, describing the issues of durability of ion-implanted layers, and in 2006 he obtained the title of professor in the field of technical sciences. Numerous scientific works by Prof. Piotr Tarkowski concerned the problem of changing the properties of metal materials as a result of treatment with the ion implantation method, in terms of using this method for the needs of the automotive industry.

Professor Tarkowski was the head of the Department of Motor Vehicles at Lublin University of Technology for almost 20 years. He promoted five doctors as well as numerous groups of masters and engineers. He was also a member of the Lublin branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Lublin Scientific Society and the Polish Scientific Society of Internal Combustion Engines.

The employees of the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will always remember him as the tutor of a large group of scientists and graduates. He was a calm and prudent person in all professional and life decisions, frugal in words, generous in providing help and scientific support.
