Visiting professor from the Republic of India

In the last days, there was a meeting between Prof. Nanthagopal Kasianantham from Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) in India and Prof. Paweł Droździel, Vice-Rector for Education. The meeting was also attended by Dr. Eng. Michał Jan Gęca (research supervisor and coordinator of the stay), Prof. Jacek Hunicz from the Department of Sustainable Transport and Propulsion Sources and Beata Kijak-Mitura, MA from the Office for Scientific Research and International Cooperation.

During the meeting, various activities related to student exchange, exchange of researchers as well as research cooperation between LUT and VIT were discussed in detail.

Professor Nanthagopal Kasianantham will conduct joint research in the Department of Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Aviation Propulsion Systems during the period of November 2021 to April 2022. During his 6-month stay, he will undertake joint research on the supply of alternative fuels to internal combustion engines. The cost of the stay and arrival of the scientist are covered by the Ulam Programme financed by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA).

The invited scientist published nearly 83 research papers on the reduction of emissions and the use of biofuels in internal combustion engines. He has a Hirsch index of 29 and according to the rankings published by Stanford University in 2020 and 2021, he is among the top 2% scientist of the world. He is also working on the sustainable mobility in the current automotive scenario and received 2 research grants for the sustainable use of biofuels from the Department of Science and Technology, India.

He continues his research activity in the form of joint research publications, research grants and other joint activities with several partners in countries such as Great Britain, Poland, Portugal, Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, Finland, South Korea, etc. He has over 25 joint research publications with international partners. Moreover, he is interested in developing a strong research network in the field of sustainable biofuels for clean energy and mechanical engineering. The strength of the network lies in the number of scientists involved as well as in the mutual complementation of the apparatus potential. Prof. Nanthagopal Kasianantham is also an active reviewer in many scientific journals (Fuel, Energy Conversion and Management, Energy).

Prof. Grzegorz Litak from LUT was the person who first contacted Prof. Kasianantham. In 2020, the then rector of LUT, Prof. Piotr Kacejko, signed an application prepared by Dr. Gęca which was submitted to NAWA. The application was positively assessed at the end of 2020 and received funding. In 2021, Prof. Zbigniew Pater, the current rector of LUT, signed an agreement to admit Prof. Kasianantham for the purpose of conducting scientific research. Thanks to the support of the organizational units of Lublin University of Technology, it was possible to organize the stay, despite the unfavorable conditions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
